Which assessment is right for you?

One of the assessment tools we use as part of the overall autism assessment process. It is an assessment that can be used with people of all ages, abilities and language skills.

It is a semi-structured, standardised assessment of communication, social skills, play and restricted and repetitive behaviours.

The ADOS takes 40 – 60 minutes to complete and is administered in one of our assessment rooms with a clinician and an observer to ensure the highest form of accuracy. It is strongly advised that parents/carers are not present during the assessment as this can affect the results.
DISCO is designed to elicit a picture of the whole person through the story of their development and behaviour.
The primary purpose is to facilitate understanding of the pattern over time of the specific skills and impairments that underlie the overt behaviour. The DISCO consists of a number of questions about the patient’s developmental history and current presentation.

The DISCO is completed between a clinician and someone who has a good knowledge of the patient throughout their life, known as the informant.

The findings from DISCO are relevant and helpful for children and adults of any age; for any level of ability from profound learning disability to the superior range, for any manifestation of the autism spectrum from the most obvious to the most subtle. It can also assist in identifying conditions often associated with the spectrum, such as ADHD, tics, dyspraxia and catatonia-like disorders.
The DISCO can be completed remotely and can be done over the phone or over video consultation.

Full assessment combining ADOS & DISCO followed by a clinical report that outlines the assessments, a diagnosis if appropriate and clinical recommendations.

What is Autism?

How Autism is defined.

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by varying degrees of difficulties with social interaction, communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviours. It is considered a “spectrum” disorder because it affects people differently and requires different levels of support.

The impairment triad.

The impairment triad includes three main areas, and those showing areas of difficulty in all 3 may have ASD:

1. Social interaction.

2. Communication.

3. Restricted/repetitive behaviours.

What are your next steps if you think you may have Autism?

While there is no cure for autism, early intervention and therapy can help individuals with ASD improve communication, social skills, and overall quality of life.
